Back in 2017, Twitter killed 6-second looping video service Vine. Two years later, co-founder Dom Hofmann teased a return, and last April introduced a closed beta. Byte today is officially launching for Android and iOS.
The 6-second looping video premise is unchanged, with Byte this afternoon calling it “both familiar and new.”
Citing a “creativity first” tagline, Byte plans to launch a partner program that will pay creators “very soon.”
Byte is available now on Google Play and the App Store. On Android, users can “Sign in with Google,” while iOS also offers a “Sign in with Apple” option. You then select a username and profile image.
The “Home” tab is a fullscreen feed of vertical video that you scroll through. At launch, it features content “rebyted” by the team byte account that you’re auto-following. The Search page features feeds like “Popular Now,” an experimental “Your Mix,” and “Latest,” as well as categories for Comedy, Animation, and Pets. “Activity” and “Profile” — with stats, liked bytes list, settings, and more — round out the core navigation.
To create a byte, tap the center button and grant the necessary camera, video, and audio permissions. From here, you can access your camera roll, while the capture UI features a delete capability and “Ghost mode” filter.
