Destiny 2 has released a Director’s Cut that is addressing fan concerns about content “FOMO”. For those who don’t know, “FOMO” means fear of missing out, and fans have been upset by the amount of FOMO distress the game causes. Most of Destiny 2’s content is only available for a limited amount of time, so players feel as though they are forced to keep playing in order to see everything it has to offer.

Destiny 2 has remained massively popular since release, and was one of 2019’s best selling Steam games. A lot of the reason the game has remained so popular is that Bungie is almost constantly adding new features to it. Last year Destiny 2 launched Shadowkeep, that which brought brand new classes and missions for players to explore. One of the biggest problems with the game, other than FOMO, is the fact that players must constantly grind to be effective in Destiny 2.

Bungie stated during the Director’s Cut that it felt the game had far to much FOMO this year. The company acknowledged that Destiny 2 players had grown tired of not being able to check everything out without constantly playing the game, and wanted to ensure that this is fixed for the next year. Rather than continue to work on limited time seasonal content, Bungie has announced that it will start focusing on Destiny 2’s core activities like The Crucible and The Ordeal.

The main problem with Destiny 2 is that it’s design forces players to choose between seasonal content and those core activities. Season activities will typically give players more unique loot to equip, but the core activities will give out a lot more XP. This creates a unique problem where players have to choose between loot or experience, and feel as though they are being pulled in different directions. Bungie has stated that it is working on ways to rectify this, by possibly adding more unique items to core activities.

Destiny 2 has been able to remain consistently popular for several years. Over time though fans have begun to become upset by the fact that the game design is requiring them to miss out out on certain things. A lot of players feel as though they can’t leave, instead of feeling like they want to keep coming back. Eventually this leads to a lot of burn out on the part of fans. Hopefully Bungie can fix these problems for the new year.
