Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Clare Kramer feels that no one really wants a reboot of the series. Kramer portrayed fan favorite Big Bad Glory during the show’s fifth season. While some fans may still be clamoring for more, the actress doesn’t see a way for it to happen.
Without context, it can be difficult to understand just how groundbreaking and influential BtVS truly was. There is a reason that over 20 years after its premiere, the series maintains a loyal fanbase across the globe. Creator Joss Whedon took the idea that high school is Hell quite literally and, in the process, made a show that continues to resonate with viewers of all ages. The series not only gave us one of the greatest fictional feminist icons of all time, but also continually subverted expectations. Popularizing serialized storytelling, introducing fans to “Buffy speak” and creating characters as lovable as the were relatable, there is certainly an argument to be made that BtVS is deserving of a reboot. However, if the show has taught us anything, it’s that just because you can resurrect something, doesn’t mean you should.
When asked by news.com.au if Buffy the Vampire Slayer should be revived as other popular series have in recent years, Clare Kramer responded, “No! Nobody wants it.” The actress went on to elaborate, “I think people are interested in what is happening with it but I don’t think true Buffy fans want it unless it’s with the original cast, which I don’t think will happen.” Due to the fact that talks of a revival have been in the works for years, Kramer does recognize that a reboot may be unavoidable, but feels that without Whedon behind the wheel and Sarah Michelle Gellar in the titular role, it simply would not work. This echoes the sentiments of most fans, including Gellar herself. Many were outraged when it was initially announced that the revival might commence without Whedon’s involvement, but the project has since fallen through.
Kramer remains best known for her role as Glory, although some may also remember her as Courtney in Bring It On. Glory was a god on a mission to unleash Hell on earth so that she could get home. After the Scoobies managed to defeat her, the character did return for a brief cameo in the show’s final season. Kramer stated that she initially thought that the episode would lead to a recurring role and although glad to be involved, was disappointed that it didn’t.
As much as most fans would love to see Buffy the Vampire Slayer alive and kicking once more, most can acknowledge that the time for it has likely passed. Even if Buffy were to return in some sort of mentor capacity, there would be no coming back for either of her famous paramours. David Boreanaz and James Masters aren’t immune to aging like Angel and Spike.
So much of the show’s magic was about unpacking everything that comes with wading through the treacherous waters of adolescence, and later, young adulthood. Aside from that, a reboot just for the sake of one would do a disservice not only to viewers, but to the show’s legacy as well. Without the right story, even the biggest Buffy buff has to admit that there is no reason to move forward. Fox may be waiting for Whedon, but thus far, the only way the auteur has come back to his magnum opus is by penning the comics once more.
The series has continued on in the comics, which are currently readying for season 12. The writers have crafted an excellent story unrestricted by the budgetary constraints of television, but with all the heart and humor fans would expect. It will be exciting to see where Whedon takes the Scoobies now that he is returning to to the book. Perhaps the ageless world of comics is the best way for the show to continue to thrive.
