Captain Marvel star Brie Larson will head up the cast of an as-yet-untitled female-centered CIA drama from Apple. With new content options emerging on seemingly a weekly basis, Apple is also getting into the act by producing their own series, and thus far they’ve been able to lure some pretty big-name on-screen and off-screen talent into the fold.
Apple kicked things off in major fashion in 2017 when they revealed they were developing a series with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston about the goings-on at a morning TV show. In early 2018, La La Land director Damien Chazelle also signed on with the company to produce his own original series. Apple later recruited M. Night Shyamalan to develop his own thriller series as well. Other big-name actors committed to working with Apple include Jason Momoa, who will play a warrior in the drama series See, and Chris Evans who’s signed on to star in and produce the legal thriller Defending Jacob.
Now, Evans’ MCU teammate Brie Larson has followed him into the Apple fold. Deadline reports that Larson will both executive produce and star in an untitled CIA drama based upon the real-life exploits of former undercover operative Amaryllis Fox, who is set to tell her story in an upcoming memoir Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA. Animal Kingdom executive producer Megan Martin is set to write and serve as executive producer on the show, which has received a straight-to-series order.
Larson of course is one of the biggest names in entertainment right now thanks to her starring role in Captain Marvel, the first Marvel movie solely headlined by a female character. Before becoming Carol Danvers, Larson won an Oscar for portraying a kidnapped woman surviving captivity with her son in Lenny Abrahamson’s harrowing Room. In addition to her new series with Apple, Larson will also team with Netflix for a pair of upcoming movies, one which she directed herself. And of course Larson will also reprise her role as Captain Marvel later this year in Avengers: Endgame.
Though some are concerned about the effect streaming services like Netflix are having on the entertainment game, there’s little doubt that streaming is here to stay. Thanks to companies like Apple sinking millions of dollars into creating content, it seems there will be no end to the potentially great films and series headed to all the many available streaming platforms. And as long as those opportunities are out there, it’s not surprising to see big stars like Larson signing up to tackle new acting and producing challenges.
