Captain Marvel plays a key role in Marvel’s current Infinity Countdown event, but the last thing readers expected to see was a glimpse of Brie Larson’s version of the hero. Surprisingly, though, that’s exactly what a preview for next week’s Infinity Countdown: Captain Marvel has revealed.

The Infinity Countdown event has featured the return of the Infinity Stones, with each Stone possessed by a different hero or villain. Carol Danvers has successfully recovered the Reality Stone, and she’s using it to phenomenal effect. Next week sees Marvel publish Infinity Countdown: Captain Marvel #1, launching an arc in which Captain Marvel continues to face the challenges of wielding an Infinity Stone.

CBR has released an exclusive preview of the issue, and it features one of the most creative uses of the Reality Stone to date. It seems Carol has learned to tap into the Multiverse and consult with others who bear the Reality Stone - including other versions of herself. It didn’t take eagle-eyed readers long to spot an amusing cameo:

That’s clearly Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, with the costume and colorscheme inspired by set photos. Of course, the reality is that this problem isn’t the MCU’s version of Captain Marvel; next year’s Captain Marvel movie is an origin story, and Marvel insiders have teased that Carol will have donned her traditional colorscheme by the end of the film. Unless Captain Marvel sees the titular hero wield the power of the Reality Stone, this must simply come from another part of the Multiverse that’s close to the MCU.

This is undoubtedly one of the most creative uses of the Reality Stone to date, with Carol essentially tapping into the knowledge of an untold number of Captain Marvels. She admits that it’s a little overwhelming, as everyone has a different opinion, but it’s certainly a smart way of strategizing. That said, some of the versions she’s communicating with will probably be rather less than helpful; the art includes a glimpse of the Marvel Zombies Captain Marvel. Her advice on defeating Blastaar would probably be somewhere along the lines of “eating his brain.”

Amusingly enough, look closely at the bottom right-hand corner of the page. Although the colorscheme doesn’t match, that costume is clearly based on the one adopted by DC Comics’ Captain Marvel. It’s the second time this year Marvel has included a subtle nod to the character, suggesting he’s part of their Multiverse in some strange sense. In fact, Infinity Countdown Prime actually teased that Billy Batson too owns a Reality Stone, dovetailing perfectly with this scene.
